How do you feel the shoes of a giant?
That was the situation that faced us with the passing of our long-time Office Assistant Vickie Nettles. She meant so much to this organization and to the families we served. She was who we all contacted when we had questions about autism or just needed a sympathetic ear. She helped us to move the Autism Society forward by being available to make presentations to various groups and participate in community resource fairs. She was one of the main reasons that the Autism Society of Acadiana had grown so much. Her death left a huge hole in our chapter that could not be easily filled.

I was honored to attend the Autism Society of America's international conference this year. But not long after I returned, Vickie Nettles passed away unexpectedly. Since this blog is something that she I worked on together, I've been procrastinating on posting it. It's hard without her here. Her last words to me were that I should post the blog as is, it's great. So that's what I'm doing, Vickie, albeit delayed. It's important for me to share this information with our community and I know Vickie will be proud.

Sometimes everything works out great, and we feel like autism rock stars. Other times it does not work out so well and we leave wishing it were easier for us to enjoy a "normal" family experience.

The thought of my child, my beautiful 2-year-old baby having something called "autism," a "life-long disability" that was "incurable" ran continuously in an endless loop around and around my brain.

It is so true when they say "If you meet one person with autism, you've met one person with Autism." The families we spoke with were interested in our story and what we had experienced in the last year. Most of them gave me great insight about what was to come and what to expect next. When they would meet Noah, everyone commented on how adorable he was and how much of a heart breaker he was going to be. It was such an awesome experience, and I'll never forget the impact it made on me personally for as long as I live. I'll attend the walks every year, but this year will always stand out to me as the one that impacted me the most.

The Walk for Hope and Family Fun Day to be held this year at Blackham Coliseum on April 5th is a major fundraiser for Autism Society Acadiana.

Welcome! This is the 2nd installment of our recently launched blog, Autism in Acadiana: A Walk in Our Shoes. We hope to bring you interesting perspectives from various people whose lives are affected by autism spectrum disorders in Acadiana: moms with young children; a mom with an adult daughter, and an individual on the spectrum.
